Follow me on Twitter this week for Thanksgiving updates...
- "6-5 is not good enough..." Famous first and last words from Charlie Weis.
- Jim Harbaugh, you should learn from the soon-to-be departed Coach Weis. Arrogance does not translate into wins. After back-to-back victories against Pac-10 powers Oregon and USC, the "modest" Michigan man had his team believing the hype. One week later, the air came out of the balloon with a rivalry loss to Cal without their best player Jahvid Best.
- Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli could lead my team any day of the week.
- If you read this blog often, you don't need me to pile on Les Miles. I've said it all many times before. He will never win anything of consequence with his own players at LSU.
- The Big Ten always gets a second at-large team into the BCS, yet we can all agree it's a boring if not downright bad conference. Why continue to showcase that type of football on the sport's biggest stage? This year, Iowa (without QB Ricky Stanzi) will get a BCS at-large nod. I can't NOT think of teams that I liked to see play in the BCS more than Iowa.
- My buddy Martini complains that I say nothing nice about his 7-3 Cowboys. So let's move onto the next game...
- If the Lions invest in some offensive linemen, Matthew Stafford will get the franchise back to respectability. Leading his team to a win over the Browns was OK. Throwing for over 400 yards and 5 TDs was impressive. Throwing the game-winning TD pass with an apparent shoulder dislocation was the stuff of budding legend.
- The Giants/Falcons was a perfect example of the flawed overtime system in the NFL. Neither defense was capable of getting a stop at that point of the game, so the outcome was determined by a coin flip.
- After the first two drives, Eli Manning played his best football of the season and maybe his Giants career sans 2008 playoffs. He had never thrown for over 300 yards in Giants Stadium before Sunday.
- Don't ask me how the Steelers lost to the Chiefs.
- The Colts have been outplayed for four consecutive weeks, but they remain undefeated. Record aside, they are clearly not the best team in the AFC.
- The Chargers appeared to bury the Broncos for good Sunday. If San Diego does not suffer another key injury or lose an important player to suspension, they should coast down the stretch.
- Chris Simms was never good, yet he'll have a full NFL career. Simms should have been Major Applewhite's back-up at Texas, but he earned the starting job by having a famous last name. Despite his mediocre college career, Jon Gruden thought he could turn him into an NFL starting QB...false. Now, he bounces around the league as a back-up, who cannot make it past a quarter without getting the hook.
- If Ben Roethlisberger cannot go and Charlie Batch broke his wrist, who tries to stop the Steelers losing streak next week? Former Oregon QB Dennis Dixon is next on the depth chart. The Steelers play at Baltimore on Sunday night. Decent stage for a debut!
- Don't ask me how the Bengals lost to the Raiders.
- Quick Raiders theory: They should trade for a veteran QB. The rest of the team is not that bad, but they keep trying to develop a young quarterback. When you change coaching staffs annually, you cannot do that, so sign another Rich Gannon. They have enough decent players in other areas to go 8-8 if they had average QB play.
- Are the Thanksgiving games always awful because the networks know that we'll watch anything that day? Lions/Packers and Raiders/Cowboys plus Broncos/Giants on NFL Network. I'll be so high on tryptophan, I'll swear that's Chris Simms carving up the Giants defense.
- Happy Turkey Week everybody!
