A Fresh Perspective on the World of Sports

Take a Breath

I'll be having a bracket burning party at my place later if you're interested.

  • Kansas could not separate from Lehigh.  Of all the crazy things that happened yesterday, that might be the craziest.
  • Georgetown's effort was a fireable offense.  John Thompson III has too much stored credit to be on the hot seat in D.C., but how can you give up 97 points to Ohio?  Did they watch comatose Villanova earlier in the day and think, "We can trump that!"???  JTIII is sitting there after the game going, "What did I forget from the pre-game speech?  Offense, no, got that.  Apathy, check.  Oh yeah, defense!!!"
  • Scottie Reynolds shot 2-15 from the field for Nova.  Yet, the referees bailed him out time after time down the stretch, so he shot 16 free throws (and made 15).  You should have to earn that type of respect from the zebras.
  • Your trash is our treasure.  Transfers were a noticeable theme yesterday.  Armon Bassett (Indiana), Chace Stanback (UCLA), Ekpe Udoh (Michigan), Ben Hansbrough (Mississippi St.) and Denis Clemente (Miami) all flamed out of big time schools.  Ironically, those "big time" schools are home watching the tournament, while Ohio, UNLV, Baylor, Notre Dame and Kansas St. got to participate.
  • Bassett is a great example that playing time breeds confidence.  He's the star for Ohio, so he knows that he can miss shots and stay in the game.  Psychologically, you make more shots when you're not afraid to miss.  He made plenty yesterday (5 threes) in a 32-point performance against Georgetown.
  • In case you missed the "dinner game," Shelvin Mack went 7-9 from three to pace Butler over UTEP.  The Bulldogs never graduate anyone, so they are loaded with experience and could make an Elite Eight run out of a weak portion of the bracket.
  • Speaking of weak portions of the bracket, the committee really outdid itself with the South.  Villanova was horrific, Notre Dame is home already and Baylor could not shake Sam Houston St..  However, St. Mary's or as I call them, the Australian National Team, appears destined for the Elite Eight.
  • Tempo is the key to most tournament games.  Remember, it's easier to slow a team down than speed a team up.  Rick Pitino's Kentucky teams were the last full-court squad to cut down the nets.
  • Jimmer!!!!!!!
  • We can all agree that yesterday was yet another screaming example of why this tournament is so great and why they would be INSANE to mess with the greatest annual event in American sports.  However, I've got another for you.  We don't need any more crappy major conference bubble teams.  The worst match-up yesterday in terms of quality was Texas vs. Wake Forest.  Two storied universities with lottery athletes and a buzzer beater, but if you watched the game, neither team deserved to be in the tournament, but somebody had to win.  The best games of the day came between top teams like Vanderbilt and mid-major champions like Murray St..  While the Racers don't have SEC talent, they can shoot, make free throws and protect the ball.  So, not only do you get upsets, you get high quality basketball.
  • Jimmer!!!!!!!
  • Do you remember when Georgetown got smoked by Ohio?  That was embarrassing.
  • The Big East had a rough day with Notre Dame, Marquette and Georgetown getting bounced and Villanova mailing it in.  I think we can all agree after Washington's win that the Pac-10 was the best conference in the country this year.  Right?  No...just me?  Ok, if Cal wins then we can agree.
  • Marquette should send the committee a Toyota.  The #6 seed had to play a virtual road game against a #11.  San Jose sounded like Seattle in support of the Huskies.
  • By coincidence, the Big Ten did not play a game yesterday.  Michigan St., Purdue, Wisconsin, Ohio St. and Minnesota all tee it up today.  The ACC had only Wake Forest play, so we'll get the true litmus test of their conference as well with Duke, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Clemson and Florida St. in action.  If the upsets are quelled today, we know why.
  • Jimmer!!!!!!!
  • Three things made me feel old yesterday.  One, Steve Fisher.  The first team I truly loved in any sport was "The Fab Five."  He was my first coach and he looks really old now.  Two, Ben Jacobson (Nortern Iowa) is adding to the list of coaches that I watched play with Jeff Capel (Oklahoma), John Pelphrey (Arkansas), Travis Ford (Oklahoma St.) and growing.  Lastly, a broadcaster said that Old Dominion had not won a tournament game since 1995 like it was a hundred years ago.  I remember that game in detail.  They knocked out Villanova and Kerry Kittles in triple overtime.  In fact, all the Monarchs shaved their heads for the game, which was the first time I remember seeing that tradition.  Whatever, I'm still handsome (at least that's what my mom tells me).

If the NCAA wants to screw with their product, try college football.  They could use some more teams in their playoff.

The Worst Day of the Week

Please make my bosses happy and become a Facebook fan of iBNSports and make me happy by following us on Twitter.

  • Hockey won my night again last night.  You don't often see that many lead changes, but the Capitals and Penguins traded blows in Game 6 until Washington evened the series with an overtime deflection.  It's on to Game 7 and you'd be wise to watch.
  • Thank you for playing Atlanta Hawks!   The Inside the NBA guys debated whether the Hawks should build around Joe Johnson or Josh Smith going forward.  They won't win a championship with either guy as their focal point, but I would choose Johnson because crunch-time scorers are the highest priority in the NBA.
  • The Mavericks stayed alive thanks to the "Big German."  I've never been a fan of Dirk Nowitzki, but he's quietly putting together the best playoff series of his career.  Game 1 - 28 pts./10 rebs., Game 2 - 35 pts./9 rebs., Game 3 - 33 pts./16 rebs., Game 4 - 44 pts./13 rebs..  If he had played like this against Golden State a couple years back, the Warriors would have been handled easily.  Back then, he let Stephen Jackson frustrate him, but he's calmly dealt with Kenyon Martin's antics.
  • Mark Cuban, however, is not dealing with Martin well and thought it would be "funny" to call him a "punk" or "thug" to his mother.  Cuban was an intolerable nerd that made a ton of money, so he became cool or at least gained access to the cool kids table.  But he still has all the insecurities of a guy that was bullied (by boys and girls) or rejected (by girls) his entire youth.  Don't get me wrong, the sports world is better with Cuban in it, but he still needs to settle down.
  • Jordan Farmar came to life when he was forced into action due to Derek Fisher's suspension.  Maybe, if Lamar Odom is limited tonight, Andrew Bynum can have that same galvanizing moment.  I can't fight the feeling that they'll need him to do something if they're going to win it all.
  • There are strong signals coming from MSG that Donnie Walsh and Mike D'Antoni have their eyes on Steph Curry for the Knicks lottery selection.  I think we all know how I feel about Curry, but this is bad news for Nate Robinson, who is a restricted free agent.  There's no need for two midget shooting guards who cannot play defense.  If they do sign both of them, they might as well pick up free agent Ben Gordon.  They could win games 200-199 (or lose 200-160).
  • Why does the NBA announce the MVP (LeBron James) before they announce the Comeback Player of the Year.  Are they building up to the big Danny Granger trophy ceremony?
  • I really regret writing "Thank you Brett Favre for knowing learning when to say when."  The strike-thru joke is still funny, but he's clearly coming back now, which means I was duped again.  Wouldn't it be great if he came back and Sage Rosenfels beat him out for the job?  I would pay money to see an honest training camp quarterback derby between Favre, Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson.  Hard Knocks: Minnesota Vikings please?
  • Does everyone know Stephen Strasburg?  The 6'4" right-hander pitches for San Diego St..  In 78.1 innings this season, he has 147 strikeouts thanks to a blazing fatsball that tops out at 103 mph.  Last year, he struck out 23 Utah Utes in one game.  In the last decade, outside of our team, we stopped and watched players hit like Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire.  Maybe, baseball will be redeemed by pitchers.  Personally, Zack Greinke and Tim Lincecum are the two most exciting neutral players in the game.
  • Strasburg will be drafted by the Nationals this Summer, but if you need an immediate fix for heat, check out Daniel Bard.  The Red Sox reliever got called up this week and he can bring it in the triple digits.  The difference between Strasburg and Bard is that Strasburg has good control (only 15 walks this season), but Bard struggled with his command (78 walks in 75.1 innings in 2007) before last season.  Will Bard be able to hit his spots with the bright lights on him?  I hope so, otherwise that 100+ mph fireball is a lethal weapon.
  • Do you get Starz?  If you do, you must Tivo/DVR Party Down.  It's neck and neck with 30 Rock for the funniest show on television.

National Signing Day Interviews

clock February 10, 2009 09:25 by author MooreSports

A week ago, I covered Tesoro High School's National Signing Day celebration.  Tesoro was the best football team in Orange County this year and they had six players sign with Division-1 schools.  Here's the rundown:

Preston King - WR/DB/Returner - He's headed to San Diego St. to wake a dormant program under the new leadership of Brady Hoke, the former Ball St. coach.  King will contribute immediately in the return game.

John Michael Davis - LB - Davis played at three different high schools (Orange Lutheran, Santa Margarita and Tesoro), but he's settled on Boise St. for his college ball.  Rick Neuheisel and UCLA made a late push for Davis, but he was loyal to the "Smurf Turf."

Evan Finkenberg - OL - The big fella will be looking to man a tackle spot down in the desert for Arizona St

Robbie Picazzo - QB - He earned preferred walk-on status at Stanford.  He's a thinking man's quarterback that should improve quickly under the tutelage of Jim Harbaugh.

Josh Cabral - OL - He'll be asked to display his quickness while blocking for the option at the Naval Academy.

Brett Gudim - WR - He will be playing for Troy Calhoun at the Air Force Academy.

Brian Barnes - Coach - Barnes provided a scouting report for each player and what their college coaches can expect.

You can click on the names for their interviews or just use this link: http://www.ibnsports.com/moore.aspx

Note: If you have a PC, you will have no problems viewing the interviews.  If you have a Mac, you will have to uninstall Flip4Mac and install Windows Media Player for Mac.
